Sexual Orientation

The School of Physics and Astronomy recognises that one of its key strengths is the diversity of its staff and students. Through our Equality and Diversity work, we aim to go above and beyond legislative and university requirements and celebrate this rich diversity.

The Equality and Diversity Policy provides for an inclusive environment, “free from discrimination, bullying, harassment or victimisation, where all members of its community are treated with respect and dignity. It aims to create a culture of diversity within its community, providing a dynamic working and learning environment, where all members are valued for their contribution and individuality.” It also provides that no student or member of staff will be treated less favourably on grounds which include sexual orientation and gender reassignment.

The University relaunched the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Staff Network Group in February 2010 with regular newsletters, events and activities and is also a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

We support Manchester Pride every year and have had a parade float entry for the last 3 years, Winning “Best Public Sector Entry” in 2012 and “Best Themed Entry” in 2013.

February 2015 was LGBT History Month which saw events, training, lectures and presentations around the University for staff and students.
