Our history

The School of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Manchester includes the Schuster Laboratory on the campus and the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. It is one of the largest physics departments in the UK; each year, we take in around 240 new undergraduates and 50 new postgraduates. There are around 80 members of the academic staff and more than 100 research fellows and associates. Our tradition has been established by many eminent teachers and research workers, including several Nobel Laureates.

Our teaching and research excellence

Astronomy.

Manchester is the only Physics department in the UK to be BOTH in the top five for the volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research AND to have the maximum rating for teaching as reported by the RAE and QAA government assessment panels respectively.

Our facilities

The Schuster Laboratory is a seven-floor, purpose-built building with modern, well-equipped lecture theatres and laboratories. The School is one of the few in the University to have a dedicated library. Third and fourth year students also have the opportunity to use the facilities at the Jodrell Bank Observatory.
