Teaching and research
The reputation of the School rests equally on its teaching and research, with the diversity and excellence of our research reflected in the quality of the teaching and in the range of topics available to the undergraduate.
Teaching
The School has been awarded the highest possible score of 24 points in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment, or Subject Review, carried out by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Our degree courses have been fully accredited by the Institute of Physics. These independent bodies concluded that the School is achieving its aims and objectives.
The School sets high academic standards with a curriculum which is relevant and demanding. Our reputation ensures that we attract high quality students, with an average A-level score higher than AAB.
Staff from the School have written The Manchester Physics Series, a set of 14 undergraduate textbooks published by Wiley. The series has been very successful with total sales of more than a quarter of a million textbooks; their quality is demonstrated by the reviews which they have received.
Research
The School has research interests which cover almost all of modern physics, and each year about 200 papers are published in research journals. We make extensive use of national and international research facilities such as CERN in Geneva. In the most recent research assessment exercise (RAE 2008), 85% of the School's research was rated as of international quality, with 20% world-leading. The volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research places the School 5th in the UK.
