I was lucky enough to be able to study abroad in California for my third year. It was an amazing experience in so many ways; I got an insight into education in another country, American social norms and to travel to so many new and exciting places.
Originally I was interested in Maths but on looking into it I discovered the fundamental context of maths was physics. Physics is incredible and mind-blowing; it's so satisfying hearing (and maybe understanding) how the world around you works. Manchester is an esteemed institution but when I visited the university for interview I fell in love with it and could see myself living and learning here successfully. I was right!
The university buildings, particularly Whitworth Hall, are very impressive and feel like a "university". I loved how it wasn't a campus university, and I also loved the proximity to the city centre. There are so many students in the area that there's a huge variety of easily accessible different events, and plenty of opportunities to try new things.
About the course
I enjoy the social life of the department and the different people you meet everyday. Lab work is also a lot of fun. I was lucky enough to be able to study abroad in California for my third year. I would encourage all first years even slightly interested to work really hard as you need high grades to go! It was an amazing experience in so many ways; I got an insight into education in another country, experienced American social norms and travelled to so many new and exciting places. It's hard to sum up how amazing your time away is without sounding ridiculous, but studying abroad was the time of my life and now I'm back, I am so jealous of everyone heading away to start their own years abroad.
I am now captain of the physics netball team and enjoy other sporting activities that the university offers. I have definitely developed my organizational skills, as I juggle these commitments alongside the demands of the course. Extra curricular activities make your life much healthier, through developing social skills and keeping active. I would say that Physics has also lead me to be more logical in my everyday routine.
