Faculty PhD Studentships 2012
The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences has launched a further 10 PhD studentships (also known as Dean’s Awards) for 2012. These awards are open to all nationalities and research areas within the Faculty.
The awards will be allocated to outstanding applicants seeking PhD training opportunities starting from September/October 2012. Based on the academic track-record of applicants, and evidence of research potential, we will select from across our 2012 applicants.
The Faculty PhD Studentships will cover tuition fees plus a £14,000 stipend/living allowance.

President's Doctoral Scholar (PDS) Awards
The University of Manchester launched the President's Doctoral Scholar (PDS) Award on Monday 31st October 2011.
This flagship funding scheme, which is strongly supported by the University's President and Vice Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, will offer over 100 elite studentships each year and be underpinned by a core investment of £2.5m over four years. The PDS Award will give the most outstanding students from across the UK and from around the world a foundation to support research training with prominent academics across a full range of subjects.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is now accepting applications for our 2012 PDS Awards. All applications should be made in accordance with the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
application procedure. PDS Award funding will be allocated to our most outstanding applicants seeking PhD training opportunities starting from September/October 2012.
Research Council Awards are available to British nationals resident in the UK. (Non-British European nationals are also eligible for these awards, but only in respect of the university fees.) The awards, which cover fees plus maintenance, are available for three-year PhD courses in any research area. They are funded by the government Research Councils: STFC, the Science & Technology Facilities Council, EPSRC, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The minimum academic requirement for a research council PhD award is an upper second class honours degree
Research Scholar Awards for European Nationals 4 bursaries are available which cover the fees and contribute up to £12,500 per annum towards the cost of maintenance thanks to the generosity of Mr Alan Greenwood and a bequest from Professor Lythgoe. These are very competitive and early application is advised.
5 Overseas Research Scholar Awards are awarded annually by the school and pay the difference between fees payable by UK and EU students and those payable by overseas students. They are highly competitive and early application is advisable.
European Union Funding is available through a number of three-year grants within the Training and Mobility of Researchers Programme. Applications are made by potential students who, along with the Department as host institute, apply to the European Commission, describing a PhD research programme. Applicants must be non-UK EU nationals (plus Iceland and Norway). Deadlines for applications are normally in June and December. Potential applicants should contact the relevant research group directly to discuss a possible programme.
Other Awards are offered by the School for research related to Applied Physics. These are research council and industry sponsored schemes whose number and nature varies from year to year. Potential applicants are advised to make enquires with the individual research groups. The Directory of Grant Making Trusts, published by the Charities Aid Foundation and available in many libraries, gives a comprehensive listing of grants available from other bodies.
Hulme Hall Fellowships normally cover part of the cost of a course, including residence in Hulme Hall. Enquiries should be made to the Secretary, Hulme Hall, Oxford Place, Manchester M14 5RR.
Demonstrating and Tutoring work in the School is often available to enable postgraduate students to supplement their income. In addition some postgraduate students act as tutors in student halls of residence.
Master of Enterprise scholarships. There are a limited number of Master of Enterprise (MEnt) scholarships available to British and European Union students. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of project merit and/or student motivation and strong academic credentials.
