MSc in Photon Science
The MSc in Photon Science is an unique course that has been launched in association with the University of Manchester's new research flagship, the Photon Science Institute. It has been designed to reflect the multidisciplinary nature of Photon Science and as such offers lecture course units and experimental projects not just from the School of Physics and Astronomy but also from the Schools of Chemistry, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, and from the Manchester Science and Enterprise Centre. Students take 4 core course units and then select 4 optional course units from a uniquely wide range:
Core
Laser Photonics
Laser Technology
Laser Laboratory
Spectroscopy
Options (choice of 4):
Laser Photomedicine
Laser, Electron and Photon Interactions with Atoms and Molecules
Nonlinear Optics
Soft Matter Physics
Holography
Holography Laboratory
Topics in Advanced Physical Chemistry
Advanced Instrumental Methods
Computational Chemistry
Optoelectronics for Measurement + High Speed Devices
Sensors and Systems
Spectroscopy
Tools and techniques for Enterprise
Students will also carry out an extended experimental project in one of the participating Schools.
Note: The choice of options may vary from year to year.
Assessment
Each course unit is assessed by a formal examination and/or coursework. The experimental project is examined by submission of a dissertation.
Duration
12 months full-time
Careers
Graduates will be well placed either to find employment in the optics and photonics industry or to proceed to further research study.
