PhD studentships
PhD Studentships in Physics applied to bioscience
Applications are invited for PhD studentships in the Biological Physics Group, the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester in the following areas:
- Interfacial nanostructure and solution self-assembly of peptide surfactants.
- The action of motor proteins inside cells.
- Investigating interfacial water around biomolecules by neutron scattering and computational methods.
- Computer modeling of electrical waves in the heart.
Each studentship cover 3 years tuition fees and living expenses for qualified UK/EU students, or substantial living funding for overseas students (maximum up to £10K/year). Applicants should hold or be expecting a 1st or 2(i) degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical, mathematical, engineering, or computing science subject.
For further details, please contact Professor Jian Lu for project (1) (jian.lu@manchester.ac.uk), or Dr. T. Waigh for project (2) (t.waigh@manchester.ac.uk), or Dr. JC Li (j.c.li@manchester.ac.uk) for project (3) or Dr Henggui Zhang for project (4) (henggui.zhang@manchester.ac.uk).
The studentships are open until filled.
Two PhD Studentships:
Nonlinear Optics in Biaxial Systems
Modelling of Biaxial Systems
Applications are invited for two PhD positions to work on a multidisciplinary project studying biaxial liquid crystals and funded by EPSRC. Each studentship is for a period of 42 months and is tenable from September/October 2009.
One PhD position is in the area of nonlinear optics of biaxial liquid crystals, and will be held in the School of Physics and Astronomy in the Photon Physics Group (informal enquiries to Dr Mark Dickinson, mark.dickinson@manchester.ac.uk or Dr David Binks, david.binks@manchester.ac.uk ).
Information on research activities in the group can be found at:
http://www.physics.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/photon/
The other PhD position will be on modelling of biaxial liquid crystals and will be held in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (informal enquiries to Prof. Andrew Masters, andrew.masters@manchester.ac.uk ).
Information on research activities in the group can be found at:
http://www.ceas.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/multiscale/
Each position carries a full EPSRC stipend. Applicants should have or expect to gain an excellent degree in Physics or a related subject by summer 2009.
The closing date for applications to the PhD positions is 1 March 2009. Applications should quote the name of the supervisor and be made using the on-line application form available at http://www.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/howtoapply/
Two PhD studentships in Biological Physics
Applications are invited for two PhD studentships in Biological Physics to work at the interface between physical science and biology. The projects will combine both experimental and computational approaches to study biomolecular self-assembly (Project A) and integrative cell biology (Project B). Applicants should hold or are expecting a 1st or 2(i) degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical/biological science subject.
The studentships will cover the university tuition fees for three years for a student with British citizenship and the stipend will be around £12,600 (tax free) in the first year with an increase in years 2 and 3. EU nationals who have a recent undergraduate degree from a UK university are also eligible for these studentships.
Please contact Dr Henggui Zhang (henggui.zhang@manchester.ac.uk, Tel: 0161-306-3966) for further details. Information on research activities in the group can be found at http://www.physics.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/biological/.
The studentships are open till both positions are filled. For further information, application forms for postgraduate study, contact us.
