School of Physics and Astronomy

Our Research

Astronomy.

Research activity

The School is one of the largest and most active schools of physics in the UK and includes the Jodrell Bank Observatory, one of the world's top astronomy research centres. The School also contributes strongly to the adjacent Photon Science Institute.

The School's reputation for research was confirmed by the last research assessment (RAE2008), which placed it 5th in the UK in its volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research.

Research Divisions

The research in the School is organised into four Divisions that bring together areas of physics with common interests and research culture and include: the Condensed Matter, Atomic and Biological Physics Division; Accelerator, Nuclear and Particle Physics Division; and the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. In addition, there is a Theoretical Physics Division, which cuts across the other Divisions, allowing experts in theoretical areas to work closely together, as well as collaborating with experimental physicists specific areas.

Within the Divisions, there are Research Groups that work on specific aspects of physics, across the whole range of the subject. Jodrell Bank Observatory is part of the School and we also have strong links with other University of Manchester Institutes such as the Dalton Nuclear Institute, Cockcroft Institute, Photon Science Institute and the SKA Project Office. The School has very strong links to both UK and International Facilities. More details can be found on the individual Divisional pages.

Research facilities

The home of the School is the Schuster Building, a large purpose-built Physics Laboratory with workshop facilities and teaching and research laboratories. Part of the School's activities (in photon physics and in astronomy and astrophysics) is housed in the newly-constructed Alan Turning Building, adjacent to the Schuster Laboratory.
