Interested in Science and Engineering but not sure what to study?
Attending a University of Manchester Undergraduate Open Day will give you a sense of what studying here, at the School of Physics and Astronomy, is like. You will be able to see our facilities, tour the School and our research labs and speak to students and staff in order to find out what you can expect on one of our courses.
Our open days give you and your family a glimpse of Manchester life, and attending one is the best way to find out more about the School of Physics and Astronomy, ask us for details of our courses in the question and answer session and meet our staff. You will also have opportunities to talk to current students and admissions staff and find out what they love about working and studying in Physics and Astronomy.
University Open Days are held 3 times a year, and on each date we hold 2 sessions (morning and afternoon). The next dates are Friday 17th June and Saturday 18th June 2016.
Our open days are a fantastic opportunity for you to gain a deeper understanding of our cutting-edge research, how it feeds into our teaching and what you can expect to gain from studying in our School.
UCAS Visit / Interview Day
Soon after we receive your UCAS application (UK and EU), you will be invited to attend a visit/interview day. The invitation is based on the information in your application: past and predicted academic performance, your personal statement and references.
The day gives applicants the chance to see both the School and the University and to talk to both members of staff and current students. We view the visit day as a two-way process in which you get to judge what student life would be like at Manchester and in our School, and we can assess your suitability and commitment to the course. We have produced a Visit and Interview Day Guide which contains all the information you need for the day. A guide to preparing for your interview can be found here: Preparing for interviews.
If you are successful at interview, you will be offered a place in the School of Physics and Astronomy. We try to make the visit/interview day as relaxed as possible, and you will have the chance to ask your interviewer and our current students any questions you might have regarding your chosen programme.
Our visit days run twice weekly, from October to December and February to March, and are specific to your chosen degree programme – so, if you can’t attend on a particular date because you have an interview elsewhere, we can arrange another date for you.
Parents are welcome to attend the visit day. We recognise that parents are keen to see what Manchester, the University and the School of Physics and Astronomy has to offer. Parents are encouraged to stay for the whole afternoon (except the interview) and their programme runs parallel to the applicants’ programme.
Did you know?Staff from our School have written the popular Manchester Physics Series; a set of 14 undergraduate textbooks published by Wiley, which have sold over a quarter of a million copies worldwide
