World ranking

In 2012, the Academic Ranking of World Universities in Physics (ARWU) awarded the School joint-2nd ranking in the UK and joint-13th ranking in the world, based on a wide range of measures of research performance.

Nobel Prize for Physics 2010

In 2010, the School was delighted that Professors Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov won the Nobel Prize for Physics 2010 for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene.

Research Excellence Framework (REF)

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) measures the quality of research conducted in universities and other higher education institutions in the UK against international standards of excellence.

In the most recent exercise (REF 2014), 92% of the school's research was rated as of international quality, with 38% world-leading. The volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research places the School 7th in the UK on the REF criteria. The school is also ranked #1 for Impact compared to all UK Physics departments.
