I quickly deduced that Manchester was the best choice for me. Where better to study than a world-renowned University, home to great scientists such as Ernest Rutherford and Henry Moseley?
Being a born and bred Mancunian (Manchester local, for those who aren’t familiar with the term), I quickly deduced that Manchester was the best choice for me. Where better than a world-renowned University, home to great scientists such as Ernest Rutherford and Henry Moseley?
The city is vibrant and packed with culture and history. From the Manchester United football stadium to the Trafford Centre shopping mall, there’s something here for everyone.
I was passionate about mathematics from a very young age. I enjoyed playing with numbers; going through operations such as multiplication and division, and finding patterns and sequences.
The University has a broad spectrum of study areas, with world-class academics in every field. There is a sense of unity and peace within it; not just between the students but also among the staff. This culture resonated from my very first day here, wandering through the Fresher’s Fair and feeling the passion and energy from the various societies and fellow students.
About the course
I am most enjoying the Pure Mathematics side of my course, specifically the analysis aspect. One of the main benefits of studying at a University like Manchester is that the sheer size allows such a broad scope; I have taken units ranging from Logic to Fluid Mechanics.
Thinking of choosing Physics at Manchester?
University is essentially a medium for two things; self-development and self-discovery. On this basis, I my best advice would be to start with an open mind and pay close attention to each unit, finding out which avenue you find most interesting.
One of the great things about The University of Manchester is the support and approachability of staff and fellow students alike. Advice can be easily sought when it comes to picking unit options, and there is definitely the opportunity to take advantage of the advice students in the year above can offer from their experiences.
Considering your future options is important, since ultimately the training you receive at University is essentially an investment in your future. The great thing about doing a degree in core subjects is that it opens many doors; Mathematicians and Physicists are sought after in today's market.
