Our research covers almost every field of physics, from fundamental areas to interdisciplinary projects.

Although we are already one of the largest schools of Physics and Astronomy in the country, we continue to grow in size and expertise, with more than 150 academic and research staff supporting a similar number of taught and research postgraduates.

Our internationally-leading research programmes include atomic, nuclear, particle and accelerator physics, condensed matter and soft matter physics, laser and photon physics, low temperature physics, biological physics, complexity and nonlinear physics and astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology.
