The mission of the 4IR STFC Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Intensive Science is to develop future leaders in the data intensive methodologies underpinning both modern science and the fourth industrial revolution.
The 4IR Data Intensive Science CDT is a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Lancaster and Sheffield, and includes both the School of Physics & Astronomy and the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. We also work with a range of industrial, commercial and third party organisations to broaden the impact of research in the CDT and maximise the opportunities for our students.
An explosion of data-driven technology, as well as the huge steps forward in digital engineering, over the past couple of decades have already started to transform not only the way we do science, but also the way we live our every day lives. Research projects undertaken as part of the 4IR CDT will focus on data intensive aspects of cutting edge research across Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics. These projects will also include placements with partner organisations in the commercial, industrial or private sectors in order to look at the wider applications of data driven research outside a University setting.
4IR applications are open now for a first intake of students in Oct 2017. There are between 11 and 18 fully funded 4-year studentships available across all the partner institutions in a range of data intensive research fields including astrophysics, particle physics, nuclear physics and computational physics.
Applicants will have an M.Sc. classified at 2:1 or higher, or equivalent qualification, in Physics, Computer Science, or Mathematics. 4IR studentships are available to all eligible UK- and EU-based applicants. Studentships for 2017 will be awarded on a rolling basis and early applications are therefore strongly recommended.
For further general information on the 4IR CDT please contact Dr Anna Scaife.
Applications for studentships at the University of Manchester should be made through the website, www.manchester.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/how-to-apply, and specify “4IR-CDT” in the proposed areas of interest.
