Social responsibility
Like the University as a whole, our Department is committed to providing an environment where all members of our community are treated with respect and dignity.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy adheres to the University’s social responsibility strategy, including the following areas:
Responsible processes
We aim to ensure that all our students enjoy a fully inclusive working environment.
Support policies
We're committed to ensuring staff and students have access to high levels of support during their time with us. Our key policies in this area are below:
Specialist staff networks and events are some of the ways that we keep our community engaged with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion issues, with training courses on unconscious bias and mental health support available for staff.
The Department has an Equality and Diversity Committee which meets three times a year and includes staff and student representatives at all levels.
As an Institute of Physics Juno Champion, the Department's Juno Committee meets twice a month. Along with our Athena Swan Silver Award (which we've held since 2016), the Department's Juno status demonstrates our commitment to gender equality and wider inclusion issues.
Societies and groups
Our Department has a number of groups that celebrate our values, including the Women in Physics Society and various staff network groups.
Socially responsible graduates
The Department awards the annual Alan Greenwood Prize, which is given to the student who has contributed most to promoting and enhancing opportunities for equality and diversity within the Department.
